Red Breath

Scarlet fabric and elaborate floral ornaments surround a pale mask traced with red filigree. Bright red lips repeat the costume’s dominant color, while gold stitching adds fine detail through the folds. This close portrait from the Venice Carnival turns the contrast between a still face and abundant decoration into its central focus.
